Is Chiropractic Safe for Kids?

Should infants be seen by Chiropractors?

As a mom, I completely understand this question. It is the unknown that we fear. As such, the intent behind this blog is to demystify Pediatric Chiropractic care and begin a conversation that will empower parents to make informed health choices for their family.

But first, the science…

According to Gray’s Anatomy (the textbook not the show)

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM is the most complicated and highly organized of the various systems which make up the human body. It is the mechanism concerned with the correlation and integration of various bodily processes and the reactions and adjustments of the organism to its environment.

Every person born has this nervous system and that is our master control center. It governs EACH & EVERY function in our entire body. That master control center is the Autonomic Nervous System (made up of the brain, the brain stem, the spinal cord and 31 pairs of spinal nerves). The brain must send the messages through the brain stem, down the spinal cord and out through the spinal nerves to every organ, cell, and tissue in the body.  Your skull and spine protect the nervous system. At every age, wouldn’t it be the best idea to keep your spine aligned with specific, neurological Chiropractic care so that there is NO interference with that perfect nervous system?

What happens in everyday life, is the bones of our spine (vertebrae) can move out of alignment and put pressure on the spinal nerves coming out in between the vertebrae. When that happens, the nerve can’t send the messages to and from the brain as efficiently as they are supposed to. It’s like someone stepping on a water hose, the water cannot come out as well.

With gentle Chiropractic adjustments, the vertebrae can move back into the correct position, taking pressure off the nerve, and the nerves messages can flow correctly again. The water hose has water coming through and can water and grow the garden again. This movement of the bone putting pressure on nerves is called a Vertebral Subluxation Complex, Subluxation for short.

So what does this mean for children? How can chiropractic care benefit them?

IS CHIROPRACTIC CARE SAFE FOR BABIES?

The question is common, and my answer is always the same,

“Without a doubt, YES!”

MYTH #1

CHIROPRACTIC IS ABOUT NECK PAIN BACK PAIN

FACT: The very first chiropractic adjustment delivered was in 1895 and was given to a man who lost the function of his hearing after a back injury 17 years prior.

Chiropractors help you to function your best by restoring the communication pathways between your brain and body.

MYTH #2

Chiropractic adjustments for adults and children are the same.

FACT: Sometimes parents fear what a Pediatric Chiropractic adjustment would look like. But guess what? It’s so incredibly gentle that you might not even know the baby is getting adjusted! Think about how you test if a tomato is ripe? It’s a very gentle touch, right? You’re not squeezing it hard, twisting it, or doing anything forceful. That same gentle touch is the same gentle touch used to adjust an infant. Many babies even sleep through their adjustments.

Pediatric Chiropractors are trained to AVOID any twisting, cracking, or popping. In fact, much more force is used to deliver the baby, be it vaginal or C-section deliveries.

ARE THERE BENEFITS TO CHIROPRACTIC CARE FOR INFANTS?

It’s no secret, parents are looking for more natural answers for their families and would like to avoid medications and surgeries. What could be more natural than allowing the body to organically heal itself by just making sure the messages from the brain can get to the rest of the body?

“What Chiropractic offers is not the treatment of conditions or the mere easing of symptoms, but instead restoration of nerve system performance, which affects physical, social, emotional, and spiritual expression.” -Jeanne Ohm

PEDIATRIC CHIROPRACTIC

Maybe you’ve heard of a friend’s child who was relieved from gas or torticollis from a visit to the chiropractor. Or of the neighbor’s kid who has had better luck latching now since seeing their chiropractor. In fact, we see pediatric practice members every day who suffer from colic, bed wetting, ADHD, and ear infections too. It’s true, Chiropractic care helps many children.

Subluxations cause many issues for our kids, but the good news is, you don’t have to resort to drugs or surgery to fix them!

Here is an example: There is a subluxation in the mid-back that puts pressure on a nerve going to the upper digestive system then goes to the muscle that is between the stomach and the esophagus (“food pipe”). The nerve might not be able to tell that valve to close all the way. Guess what might start happening? Milk in the baby’s stomach is coming up through the valve, into the esophagus, and getting spit up (aka Acid Reflux).

What if a gentle Chiropractic adjustment could help with the spitting up naturally instead of using a medication like Zantac which just covers up reflux by decreasing stomach acid? With Chiropractic care, we want to try get to the source and cause of your health conditions rather than cover them up with a band-aid (or pills) that potentially have additional side effects.

If you want to improve your family’s health, immune system, behavior, sleep, or quality of life then Chiropractic is for you! If you think you and your kids are already as healthy as possible, why not keep it that way? The best time to start chiropractic care is the day you’re born. The second-best time is now!
